NVS Express Data Entry, Validation and Analysis Tool

NVS Express is a purpose built Windows tool for entering and summarising vegetation data compatible with the NVS databank and accepts data collected using the NVS standard forest monitoring (i.e. Permanent 20×20 m plots) and vegetation inventory (i.e. the Recce method) methods. Refer to the NVS Survey Manuals for more information on the standard NVS data collection methods. NVS Express was built to provide data entry facilities for NVS data and tools to validate, exchange, convert, and summarise data stored within NVS (see Richardson et al. 2005 (432MB Acrobat file)).

NVS Express provides the following features and benefits:

  • Allows data entry for plot, recce, seedling, sapling, and individual tree stems data that follow standard NVS collection methods
  • Provides data validation services, including checking that valid data types are used, controlling the range of values that may be entered within each data-field, checking that species codes used are those currently recognised by NVS, and a range of post-entry dataset checks that ensure data integrity
  • Ability to export a dataset ready for upload into NVS via the NVS web site and to a range of external formats
  • Ability to import updated authority data, e.g., NVS species codes.
  • Ability to summarise (tabulations, cross-tabulations, histograms, and summary statistics) of site, Recce, understorey and tree diameter data
  • Ability to analyse temporal changes in permanent plot data. This includes Recce, understorey and tree diameter data and provides the facility to examine growth and mortality of individually tagged trees.
  • Ability to classify composition data using TWINSPAN.

NVS Express is a Windows application and will run on Windows 2000 and above. The tool requires that the Microsoft .Net framework is loaded on your computer. If the .Net framework is not present on your computer you will be asked to download this as part of the installation process. Please read the NVS Express manual for more information about how to install and use the tool.

NVS Express Workshop Resources

The Terrestrial and Freshwater Biodiversity Information System (TFBIS) recently funded eight training workshops on NVS Express. Workshop materials can be downloaded here:

In the future, further NVS Express workshops will be run. To register your interest in attending a workshop, please e-mail the NVS adminstrator (nvs@landcareresearch.co.nz) with your name, organisation, preferred workshop location and what you would like to learn at the workshop.
